2024 European Championship match between Germany and Denmark cancelled due to thunderstorm

The 2024 European Championship knockout match between Germany and Denmark was interrupted on Saturday evening as a thunderstorm with rain, hail and lightning hit the stadium in Dortmund.

The English referee Michael Oliver stopped the game after 35 minutes and took the players off the field with the score at 0-0.

While torrential rain was pouring down in the Westfalenstadion and waterfalls were penetrating the stadium roof and cascading down into the stadium below, both groups of players stood at the edge of the pitch for a few moments before being led into the changing rooms.

Oliver then led both groups of players back onto the field and the game was continued after a 24-minute break.

The round of 16 began in good weather, but after more than half an hour the conditions changed.

There were loud claps of thunder, lightning, heavy rain and hailstones as fans of both teams tried to take shelter under makeshift covers.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou told ITV: “I’m surprised it’s taken this long to take them off because there have been some pretty bad incidents with them.”
