Jeremy Renner shows his scars.

A year and a half after surviving a snow plow accident that left him on life support and numerous injuries, Renner poses shirtless on the latest cover of Men’s Health.

On the cover of the magazine, Renner’s scars from the accident are visible on his back, shoulders and stomach. Other photos from the cover shoot also show a scar on his leg.

“I never really had scars before, they were probably more emotional, mental scars, you know?” Renner said in a video accompanying the photo shoot. “And now there are some physical ones too. But the physical ones aren’t even from the accident, they’re just caused by the accident. All of these are just memories of the beautiful day that could have been a really bad day.”

Renner also took time to reflect on the accident in which he said he was briefly dead and how he carried on afterward.

“I’m glad I’m here, and I’m going to continue to nurture what you take with you: the shared experiences with your loved ones. It’s eternal, and you take it with you,” Renner said. “It’s connected. There’s no time, place, or space. It’s great. It’s the mind’s eye. Not your vision. You don’t need vision – you’re dead. The vision is part of this stupid body thing. But the mind’s eye is what you take with you. You see in your mind – that’s being dead. That’s what it’s like to be dead.”
