Former NYPD officer admits she shot her ex-girlfriend and killed her new lover in a love triangle

A former police officer pleaded guilty to killing her ex-girlfriend’s new lover and shooting her estranged lover with a New York Police Department weapon – agreeing to a prison sentence of up to 27 years, officials said.

Off-duty officer Yvonne Wu, 34, admitted in Brooklyn Supreme Court on Thursday to shooting her ex-girlfriend Jenny Li, 34, and Li’s new lover Jamie Liang, 24, on Oct. 13, 2021 – injuring Li and killing Liang, according to the New York Attorney General’s Office.

Wu, who is no longer a police officer, pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter and attempted second-degree murder before Judge Danny Chun.

Former NYPD officer Yvonne Wu confessed to manslaughter in connection with a fatal shooting in a love triangle.

As part of her deal with prosecutors, she agreed to a recommended sentence of 27 years in prison when Chun is scheduled to be sentenced on August 28. The judge does not have to sign the agreement.

Wu, of Staten Island, was charged with first-degree murder and related offenses and could face life in prison if convicted.

The defendant, who has been working at the 72nd Precinct in Sunset Park for five years, is said to have waited for hours outside Li’s house in Brooklyn until her ex – with whom she had been together for two years – showed up with her new lover.

Wu pleaded guilty Thursday to first-degree manslaughter and attempted second-degree murder and agreed to a recommended sentence of 27 years behind bars.

Wu – who was off-duty at the time – then shot the two with her NYPD-issued weapon inside the Bensonhursts’ home and remained there until police arrived. She coolly confessed to shooting someone, cops said at the time.

Wu had separated from Li just three weeks before the murder and may have hoped the two would get back together, sources said at the time.

Liang’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Wu and the city in 2022, claiming the NYPD knew Wu was “mentally incompetent and a danger to others” but did not force her to give up her gun.

Wu shot her ex-girlfriend and her new lover in October 2021, killing the latter.

The case is still pending and has not yet gone to trial, said Sanford Rubenstein, the attorney for Liang’s family.

“We look forward to Wu testifying under oath,” Rubenstein said. “The guilty plea has significant implications for the liability of the City of New York and the NYPD for what happened.”

Wu, who has been in prison since her indictment, remains held without bail pending sentencing.

Jamie Liang was killed by Wu.

Her defense attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday morning.
