Tamayo Perry, actor from “Pirates of the Caribbean”, dies in shark attack

Pirates of the Caribbean Actor Tamayo Perry died after a shark attack while surfing in Hawaii.

Perry, who was also a lifeguard and professional surfer, was fatally attacked on Sunday afternoon, Honolulu emergency services confirmed in a press conference.

Paramedics at Malaekahana Beach on Oahu pronounced him dead after he was brought to shore on a jet ski. He had suffered “more than one possible bite,” authorities said.

The 49-year-old actor was known for his role as a pirate in the film Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tidesthe fourth film in the Johnny Depp action series. The film also stars Penelope Cruz, Geoffrey Rush and Ian McShane.

He also had roles in Lost, Hawaii Five-0 And Blue Swarmmainly as a surfer, and performed stunts in several others. His last role was in a 2015 short film The bridgeaccording to IMDb.

Perry is better known locally as a surfer and began working as a lifeguard with the Department of Marine Safety in July 2016.

“Tamayo Perry was a lifeguard loved by all,” said Kurt Lager, Honolulu’s deputy chief of marine safety. “He is well known on the North Shore, a professional surfer known around the world. Tamayo’s personality was infectious and as much as people loved him, he loved everyone else even more. Our condolences go out to Tamayo’s family and the entire lifeguard ohana.”

Mayor Rick Blangiardi added that Perry’s death was a “tragic loss” and called him “a legendary and highly respected sailor. He grew up here and was just a great member of our marine safety team.”
