IMPD: Man arrested for illegal possession of weapons, federal arrest warrant issued

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department arrested a man in Northeast Indiana on Wednesday for possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon and an outstanding warrant for violating his federal parole.

According to court documents, IMPD officers were near the 3400 block of N Parker Avenue when they noticed a man outside a residence. Police said he was clearly carrying a handgun and identified him as 32-year-old Dawayne Hawkins.

IMPD reported that investigators recognized Hawkins from a previous incident. They found that he had a warrant out for violating federal probation, which prohibited him from possessing firearms.

IMPD said that after noticing Hawkins enter a residence, investigators requested and obtained a search warrant. There, they found two firearms believed to have been stolen during a robbery last May. This led to Hawkins being taken into custody after a two-hour standoff. According to court documents, the Marion County District Attorney’s Office will make the final decision regarding his charges.
