Child and adult involved in fatal pedestrian accident near Mamaroneck Ave School

An adult and a child were hit while crossing the street near the elementary school. Police confirmed that one of the victims died.

MAMARONECK, NY – A child and an adult were hit while crossing the street near Mamaroneck Avenue School, an elementary school, this morning, just days before the end of the school year.

According to initial reports, the tragic pedestrian accident occurred around 9 a.m. on Mamaroneck Avenue near New Street.

“This morning there was a serious accident involving a child and an adult on Mamaroneck Avenue,” Mamaroneck School Superintendent Charles Sampson wrote in a message to families. “The two were struck by a vehicle on their way to school and were transported to a local hospital. We are working with authorities to monitor the situation and provide the necessary support to our students, staff and families. Our thoughts and condolences are with the entire MAS community.”

According to NBC News New York, the victims were struck by a school bus. Aerial footage of the accident investigation broadcast by the network shows a yellow bus surrounded by police cordons. Mamaroneck police confirmed that one of the victims died at the scene.

Other media outlets report that the child was killed and the adult was seriously injured. Patch has not yet confirmed these reports.

As of 11:30 a.m., Mamaroneck Avenue remains closed between the N. Barry Ave extension and the Jefferson Ave extension due to the crash investigation. Police are asking drivers to use alternate routes.

According to Sigalert, traffic is backed up beyond I-95/New England Thruway while the traffic investigation is ongoing.
