17-year-old dead after Juneteenth event

Gunfire erupted Wednesday night following a Juneteenth event at Washington Park in Milwaukee. One Milwaukee teenager died, a second was injured and a third was taken into custody. In a late evening press conference, Chief Deputy Daniel Hughes of the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office updated news crews on the following information: A Juneteenth event at Washington Park was ended early by organizers due to several fights involving “large groups of unsupervised youth.” Fighting continued even as people left the event. At 8:53 p.m., Chief Deputy Hughes said deputies received a call about a group of about 50 children “about to fight” on the northeast corner of Washington Park, near the playground at the corner of 42nd and Lloyd. A plainclothes MCSO detective was the first to arrive on the scene and saw someone firing a gun in the direction of the playground. One victim was struck multiple times by gunfire. The detective opened fire on the shooter. The shooter then ran north from the scene. A second detective later arrested the shooter, who was not injured, at gunpoint. The shooting victim, a 17-year-old Milwaukee boy, was taken to a hospital but did not survive. At 9:35 p.m., a hospital reported that a second shooting victim had been admitted with injuries. That person is a 15-year-old Milwaukee boy. He is expected to survive. Three guns were recovered after the shooting. Five more guns were recovered after the Juneteenth event ended, Hughes said. The detective who opened fire is a 27-year MCSO veteran and is on leave in accordance with department policy. Charges against the suspected shooter, a 17-year-old Milwaukee boy, will be forwarded to the district attorney’s office. Hughes said the MCSO arrested the same person on May 20 for illegal possession of a firearm. Chief Deputy Hughes said that person was out on $750 bail at the time of the Washington Park shooting. “We don’t control the court system,” Hughes said. “We only make arrests on the street, so it’s unfortunate that the same person was out on bail who is now accused of killing someone tonight.” As mentioned, the shooting occurred after a Juneteenth event. Hughes called that fact “upsetting,” adding, “We have an event that’s supposed to celebrate the Juneteenth holiday, and it ultimately ends with a young man being killed. I don’t think there’s anything more to say about that.”
