A criminology student at FUOYE in Ekiti State is facing arrest for allegedly raping a male student on campus. The incident sparked widespread outrage and debate and shed light on societal attitudes towards same-sex assault.

A disturbing incident occurred on Monday, June 17, 2024, at the Federal University Oye Ekiti (FUOYE) where a 400th year Criminology student, Asiwaju, was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a male student. According to reports, Asiwaju was caught red-handed in his hostel and evidence of the assault was discovered. Prompt police intervention averted a possible lynching by the outraged students.

The news sparked a wave of reactions on social media, with many expressing shock, anger and disappointment at the alleged crime. Some comments poked fun at the irony of a criminology student committing a crime, while others questioned the potential sentence and prison term that Asiwaju could face given the unusual nature of the offence.

A significant portion of the reactions condemned the alleged act, calling it unacceptable and immoral. Some comments suggested that Asiwaju may have been influenced by external factors, such as the availability of explicit materials or a general decline in moral values.

Others urged that the matter be dealt with through the due process of law and called for harsh punishment if convicted. Some comments drew parallels to the treatment of female victims and asked whether male victims should expect similar care or victim blaming.
