What we know about Gordon Ramsay’s bicycle accident

On June 15, celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay shared on X (formerly Twitter) that he was in a serious bike accident in Connecticut earlier in the week. “Honestly, I’m lucky to be here,” the chef said while describing the incident in a short video. Although the details of the accident are unknown, Ramsay wrote on Instagram, “I didn’t break any bones or sustain any major injuries.” According to the chef, he was treated at Lawerence + Memorial Hospital in New London, Connecticut.

Thankfully, Ramsay said he is OK but shaken up after the “really bad accident.” In the video he shared with X, Ramsay lifted the shirt of his chef’s uniform to reveal a huge bruise that appeared to cover a large portion of his torso and stomach. Ramsay then said, “I’m a little bit bruised and I look like a purple potato.” The chef explained that he is still in pain after the accident and that it has been a brutal week, but still, “I’m somehow getting through it.”

Gordon Ramsay called the trauma surgeons, doctors and nurses who cared for him “incredible” and expressed his gratitude to all of them, but also stressed that his helmet was the real lifesaver. Ramsay shared a photo of his helmet and cycling gear in his Instagram post, and everything seemed to have taken a pretty big hit in the accident. Ramsay is a successful athlete and avid cyclist who competes in events such as triathlons and even took part in an Ironman race in 2013. “I don’t care how short the ride is, I don’t care… the fact that these helmets cost money, but they are essential,” he said in the video he shared with X.

Ramsay’s video message came just one day before Father’s Day and he used the opportunity to make his message loud and clear: “WEAR A HELMET!” Ramsay is a father of six and this isn’t the first time the chef has had a near-death experience. In 2008, Ramsay fell off a cliff while filming a show in Iceland. His bike accident is another example of how while you never know what the next day will bring, you can always put safety first.
