PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – A man is dead after being shot by police officers in Vancouver early Monday morning, authorities said.

According to Vancouver police, just before 1 a.m., an officer was stopped on Northeast Andresen Road where several people reported that a man had pointed a gun at them.

Additional officers arrived at the scene and found the suspect a few blocks away. The suspect did not comply with police orders, authorities said, so an officer released his sniffer dog on him, at which point the suspect pointed his gun at officers.

Vancouver police said four officers fired at the suspect, hitting him. The police dog was also shot in the rear during the incident.

Authorities said they attempted to provide medical aid to the suspect and he was eventually taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. The police dog underwent surgery on his tail.

According to the protocol, all four officers involved are on critical incident leave and their body camera footage will be reviewed during the investigation.
