Man wanted for rape in Jamaica caught by immigration officials in the USA

A Jamaican man who fled to the United States after being accused of raping a teenage girl was arrested by U.S. Enforcement and Removal Operations in Boston.

According to ICE, the 59-year-old non-citizen Jamaican was arrested on May 29 by deportation officers from ERO Boston’s Hartford Field Office near his Stamford residence.

“This non-citizen of Jamaica fled to the United States to escape some very disturbing charges,” said Todd M. Lyons, director of ERO’s Boston field office.

“He posed a significant threat to the people of Connecticut and will now return to Jamaica to face justice. ERO Boston will continue its work that prioritizes public safety while arresting and removing egregious non-citizen offenders from our New England communities.”

On the run from a rape charge in Jamaica

U.S. Customs and Border Protection allowed the Jamaican national to enter the United States at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York on June 14, 2020. He entered as a nonimmigrant visitor and had permission to stay in the country for six months.

On July 1, 2020, Jamaican authorities issued an arrest warrant for him for the rape of a 16-year-old child in that country.

The U.S. Department of State revoked the Jamaican citizen’s nonimmigrant visa on July 9, 2020.

After being detained by deportation officers, he was issued a summons to appear before a Justice Department immigration judge and subsequently placed in deportation proceedings. He will remain in ERO custody pending the outcome of his deportation proceedings.

As one of ICE’s three operating directorates, ERO is the primary federal law enforcement agency responsible for domestic immigration enforcement.

ERO carries out deportations of persons who have no lawful reason to be in the United States, including under orders from immigration judges in the Department of Justice’s Executive Office for Immigration Review.
