Crime rate in the US drops to “historic” low, murders, rapes and robberies decline, new statistics show

The FBI released its latest Uniform Crime Reporting survey last week, which revealed a remarkable positive trend across the United States: violent and property crimes declined by double-digit percentages.

Compared to the period January to March 2023, data from the first quarter of 2024 indicate that reported violent crime decreased by 15.2 percent.

The murder rate fell by more than 26 percent.

Rapes fell by 25.7 percent.

The number of robberies fell by 17.8 percent.

Reports of serious bodily harm fell by 12.5 percent.

Property crime also fell by just over 15 percent.

The report includes data from more than 18,000 municipal, county, state, tribal, university and college, and federal police agencies.

Last year, crime in the United States declined in nearly every category. The FBI recorded one of the lowest violent crime rates in over 50 years and one of the largest declines in the murder rate in history.
