EMSA issues first medical heat warning of 2024 for Tulsa

On Friday, EMSA issued the first medical heat warning of the year for the Tulsa area.

According to an EMSA press release, paramedics responded to five emergency calls for suspected heat-related illnesses by 7 p.m. Friday.

EMSA said four patients were taken to local hospitals due to their symptoms.

In view of rising temperatures, EMSA reminds everyone of the precautionary measures to be taken.

EMSA has shared these tips:

· Staying hydrated is key to preventing heat-related illness. Drink plenty of water or electrolyte drinks several hours before and during prolonged exposure to summer heat.

· Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing and a wide-brimmed hat when working outdoors, and take frequent breaks in the shade.

· No alcohol or caffeine.

If you do not have air conditioning, find a cooling station or a public place (such as libraries or shopping malls) during the day.

· Do not restrict the use of the air conditioning.

· When working outside, use the buddy system and look out for older neighbors.

· Always carry a mobile phone with you when outdoors, including when walking, running daily errands, gardening, or participating in sports or physical activity.
