KEWEENAW BAY – The search for missing fishermen in Keweenaw Bay ended Monday afternoon after the Michigan State Police Marine Services Unit found the capsized boat and two bodies.

The two boaters had been missing since shortly after noon Saturday when their 21-foot boat capsized while they were participating in the Keweenaw Bay Classic Fishing Tournament. Another passing boat was able to rescue three other fishermen.

The MSP unit left Monday morning to continue the search for the fishermen and the boat, Lt. Mark Giannunzio said in a news release Monday. The dive team assisted the U.S. Coast Guard with the operation on Sunday.

During the search Sunday, Coast Guard officials found a shoe and other debris believed to be from the capsized boat, Petty Officer Paul Bartholomew of Station Portage said Monday. Coast Guard officials said Sunday the search was focused on the area near the lower entrance of the Keweenaw Waterway.

During the MSP search, the victims were found dead in a 220-foot deep spot in Lake Superior.

The families of the victims have been notified, but no names are being released.

The Houghton County and Baraga County Sheriff’s Offices are also assisting in the search.

Fundraising campaigns are currently underway to support the families of the two deceased fishermen.

The Baraga County Next Gen Team, which organized the fishing tournament, started a GoFundMe page and as of Monday afternoon, more than $5,000 had been raised.
