South San Francisco man arrested after holding grandmother hostage at knifepoint: police

(KRON) — A South San Francisco man was arrested Friday after taking his grandmother hostage and barricading the two in a home, South San Francisco police said.

The SSFPD responded to a woman’s call for help in the 200 block of Linden Avenue at 6:12 p.m. Thursday. When they arrived, officers learned that the 70-year-old victim was being threatened with a knife by her 30-year-old grandson, identified as Miguel Gutierrez.

While police were negotiating with Gutierrez, he forced the victim back into the house, which resulted in the deployment of the SWAT team, police said.

After the SSFPD Crisis Negotiation Team spent six hours speaking with Gutierrez, “negotiations stalled and concerns for the victim’s well-being grew,” police said. Shortly after midnight, the SWAT team conducted a “high-risk hostage rescue.”

The victim was taken to safety and Gutierrez was taken into custody without anyone being injured.

Gutierrez was jailed for kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon, false imprisonment, assault and pointing a weapon.
