Houston police investigate officer-involved shooting at apartment complex | Texas

Houston, TX — Houston police are investigating an incident in which two HPD officers discharged their service weapons at a man at 2630 Tanglewilde Street around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The 19-year-old man was struck once and transported to an area hospital. His injuries are not life-threatening. HPD Officers J. Simon and S. Salameh, who fired their weapons, were not injured during the incident. Officers Simon and Salameh are assigned to the Midwest Patrol Division and were sworn in as officers in August 2020 and May 2021, respectively.

Sergeant E. Wohlgemuth of the HPD Special Investigations Unit and Detectives M. Childs, D. Hammons, and A. Henderson reported that HPD patrol officers responded to a burglary call at a residence in an apartment complex at the above address. The apartment resident called 911 after receiving an alert from a security system camera showing three black men forcing entry into the apartment. One of the suspects turned the camera downward.

Unbeknownst to the officers, the resident had also called family members in the area before calling 911. One of the family members arrived before the officers and found that the burglary suspects did not were no longer on the scene.

When officers arrived, they saw a man matching the description of one of the burglary suspects in the area of ​​the apartment. When officers told the man to stop, they noticed he had a gun pointed in their direction and fired their firearms, striking him once in the leg.

Police later identified the man as a family member of the apartment resident. The investigation is currently ongoing to determine whether the man fired a shot during the incident.

As is typical in police-involved shooting incidents within Houston city limits, this matter is being investigated by HPD’s Special Investigations Unit, Division of Internal Affairs and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
