Captain’s Journal, Day 5.

The water boiling notice remains in force in a part of Atlanta, even if its limits have been considerably reduced since the previous dispatches. (Residents are advised to check their address here.)

The workers in the watershed finally arrested the geyser gushing near the streets 11th and Peachtree yesterday, after reaching the stop tap being directly under the aquatic assault. Repairs continue.

The local mayor, Andre Dickens, appeared during a brief press conference, apologizing once again for mediocre communication and long repair deadlines. Dickens – who attended a fundraising for the campaign in Memphis, in Tennessee, while the problems of his city were turned away – did not answer any questions.

However, he said that he was taking criticism at heart.

And later in the afternoon, the residents attended a meeting of the municipal council to provide more reflection. A sample, for the record:

  • “It is unacceptable. We have seen fire bridges, nests in a poultry engulfs cars and now access to the city’s water is cut off from the transmission network with apparent communication and transparency.”
  • “We are currently looking for a new mayor and new members of the council. We have finished with you all (cattle excrement).
  • “It was not an act of God. It was an act of negligence. … How many times will the city be taken the downstream pants? ”

Shortly after, the watershed commissioner, Al Wiggins, and the acting director, Lachandra Burks (who were both appointed to their current posts a month ago) addressed the council .

“We are installing pipes dating from the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s and our infrastructure collapsed,” said Burks. “And we know it.”

So what are they doing on this, ask yourself?

  • The city indicates that it provides for a complete assessment of its water infrastructure to guide future improvements. The body of American army engineers is committed to helping.

In the meantime: Dickens has announced its intention to create a financial emergency fund for the many companies having undergone financial losses during the breakdown.

“We know the crucial role that our small businesses play in our lives and our economy and we make sure that our neighborhoods are prosperous,” said the mayor.

A panel of judges of the 11th circuit court of appeal rendered a decision against the Fearless Fund, based in Atlanta, and its program offering subsidies to small businesses for black women.

  • The decision concluded that the fund probably violated the civil rights law prohibiting the use of the race in the conclusion of contracts. This is a major victory for conservative efforts to dismantle diversity, equity and inclusion programs in American companies.
