2 people in custody for Gila River shooting that killed police officer

GILA RIVER, AZ (AZFamily) – The FBI says two people are in custody in connection with a shooting that left a Gila River police officer dead, another injured and several people hospitalized.

On Sunday, the FBI’s Phoenix field office said a man and a boy had been taken into custody and were receiving medical treatment for injuries they sustained in the shooting.

The shooting occurred around 2 a.m. Saturday when Gila River Emergency Services received a 911 call about a disturbance at a Santan home on W. Moffett Road in the fourth district of the Gila River Indian Community.

When officers from the Gila River Police Department (GRPD) arrived at the scene, they found a large crowd and several shots had been fired.

Two officers, including Officer Joshua Briese, and four other people were hit by gunfire and taken to the hospital.

Officer Briese succumbed to his injuries. The second officer remains in serious but stable condition. Another person died, whose identity has not yet been determined.

The FBI and Gila River Police continue to conduct interviews, collect evidence and investigate all aspects of the case.

Once the FBI’s case is completed, it will be turned over to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona for a charging decision.
