Five people arrested after police-involved shooting on Melvindale highway

MELVINDALE, Michigan (MSP) – Five people were arrested and one man was hospitalized after a police officer was involved in a shooting on the highway in Melvindale.

According to a thread on X from MSP’s Second Precinct, it happened just before 1 a.m. this morning on Schaefer Road, west of I-75. Melvindale officers responded to calls about a suspicious vehicle and when they arrived, officers attempted to stop the vehicle before it collided head-on with an MSP patrol car.

There were six people in the car. When officers saw that one of them was carrying a weapon, they fired shots at the vehicle, hitting a 21-year-old man who is currently undergoing surgery.

All suspects fled the scene after the shooting. Five of the six people in the vehicle, two adults and three juveniles, were arrested and taken into custody in a Ford and GM storage area. Officials say the suspects broke into several vehicles in that storage area. Investigators tell us the vehicle was reported stolen in Sterling Heights.

None of the officers were injured in the incident. MSP is investigating the incident and will submit it to the District Attorney’s Office upon completion.
