Police release footage of Scottie Scheffler’s arrest outside Valhalla Golf Course

The Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) has released footage of the arrest of No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler outside Valhalla Golf Club on May 17.

The LMPD said there was no known footage showing the first interaction between Scheffler and police before the second round of U.S. PGA Championship.

The agency said the officer who arrested Scheffler, Detective Bryan Gillis, failed to activate his body-worn camera during the arrest and that “corrective action” was taken against him.

Scheffler was arrested for injuring Gillis on the way to the course and for ignoring instructions.

He was charged with second-degree assault, third-degree criminal damage, reckless driving and failure to obey a police officer’s traffic signals, all of which he denies. Scheffler’s arraignment is scheduled for June 3.

The arrest was filmed by ESPN Reporter Jeff Darlington. The footage shows a handcuffed Scheffler being led away by police. Darlington said Scheffler was arrested after “a misunderstanding in the flow of traffic led to him attempting to drive past a police officer into the Valhalla Golf Club.”

Scheffler later said, “He never intended to disobey any of the orders.” Photo credit: Louisville Metro Police Department via Storyful
