Man arrested after someone climbed onto roof in city center

A 50-year-old man has been arrested after part of a city center was cordoned off because a person climbed onto the roof of a building.

Suffolk Police were called to the Buttermarket in Ipswich at 4:35am BST on Thursday following reports of a burglary in progress at Carat’s Jewellers.

According to another report, a male suspect climbed onto the roof of the premises.

Shops were forced to close before the situation was resolved and the lockdown was lifted around 1:40 p.m.

The suspect was initially taken to hospital as a precautionary measure before being arrested on suspicion of burglary.

He was released the same day and remained in police custody.

Negotiators, rescue workers and the fire department were also on site.

Hotel Chocolat was one of the stores that remained within the lockdown and the manager said it was “incredibly frustrating”.
