ABC-7 First Alert: Air quality in the border area remains poor and there is still a chance of rain

Due to the poor air quality in the border area, an ABC-7 initial warning is in effect for us. It will remain in effect until 9 p.m. this evening. The air quality warning issued by the NWS will also come into effect again tomorrow morning. Asthmatics or allergy sufferers should wear a mask and have an inhaler on hand, as these symptoms can lead to flare-ups.

Here’s the weather pattern causing these problems. We have smoke from the fires in the Pacific Northwest. A high pressure system is helping to pull the smoke into the borderland. The fire smoke is so thick that geostationary satellites can show it from space (see circle below)!

The same system will bring showers and thunderstorms in the border region again today. I’m also predicting highs of 100 degrees for today.

As the work week progresses, we will see the chance of rain decrease and maximum temperatures rise above triple digits again.
