An 18-year-old is in custody after a man was killed in a shooting near the Embassy Suites on Saturday evening.

Captain Jack Kennedy of the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit said Tuscaloosa police were called to the area around 9:10 p.m. and found a 21-year-old man dead in a hotel parking lot.

Investigators say the suspect and numerous witnesses were interviewed at the scene and the suspect and victim were friends. A verbal altercation ensued between the two and the suspect retrieved a gun from his vehicle and shot the victim once. Kennedy said several people witnessed the shooting.

The victim was identified as Howell Booth Holland, III, 21, of Fayette, Alabama. The suspect is Jackson Luke Overton, 18, of Winfield, Alabama.

Overton has been charged with murder and is being held in the Tuscaloosa County Jail without bail.

Kennedy said none of the people involved in the incident were staying at the hotel and that they had visited bars and clubs downtown.
