100 Mile House teen files lawsuit against teacher who sexually abused her – Kamloops News

A teenager who was groomed and sexually abused by a teacher at a 100 Mile House school has filed a lawsuit against the teacher and the Cariboo-Chilcotin School District.

Castanet is not naming the plaintiff or the former teacher to avoid violating a publication ban he imposed in court last summer.

The teacher pleaded guilty to charges of sexual battery on a person under 16 and assault. He was sentenced to nine months of house arrest last August.

Two complainants were involved in the guilty pleas. Only one of them filed a lawsuit.

“Used his position of power”

According to a civil lawsuit filed Tuesday in the Supreme Court of British Columbia, the teacher “used his position of power … to repeatedly physically and sexually assault the plaintiff, who was 13 years old at the start of the abuse and 14 years old at the end.”

“(The teacher) used his position of authority and trust to physically and sexually assault (plaintiff) and instructed her not to tell anyone,” the lawsuit states.

“In order to facilitate the assaults, he engaged in a pattern of behavior designed to intimidate (the plaintiff), force her to keep the assaults secret and encourage her to believe that she was a healthy and normal part their student-teacher relationship. ”

The lawsuit alleges that the school district should have known that the teacher was spending time alone with the plaintiff at school.

“SD27 had the control, power and resources to investigate, inspect, review and interrogate all activities taking place on the site and had a duty to monitor them in a way that would have prevented the attacks,” it said it in it.

Multiple injuries are suspected

The plaintiff suffered numerous personal injuries as a result of the abuse, including suicidal thoughts, eating disorders, sleep disorders, and “nervous shock, humiliation, humiliation and embarrassment.”

According to the claim, the abuse stopped on February 28, 2021 and the teacher was arrested on April 8, 2021. He pleaded guilty in 2022 but was not sentenced until last summer.

After service, the defendants have three weeks to respond.

None of the allegations made in the lawsuit have been proven in court.
