Fairfax County police have identified suspects, but not the victim, in a homicide investigation that began with the discovery of a body in Oakton on Saturday (July 20).

Maldin Anibal Guzman, 27, and Wis Alonso Sorto-Portillo, 45, were arrested today (Tuesday) and charged with first-degree assault by mob, the Fairfax County Police Department announced.

The announcement followed an appearance on FOX5 by Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis, who told the news station this morning that two people were in custody.

According to FCPD, Guzman and Sorto-Portillo were identified by detectives “through an extensive investigation.” They are both being held without bail at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.

According to FCPD, detectives are still trying to determine the identity of the man found dead next to a wooded trail in the 9500 block of Route 29 near Fairfax Circle.

Officers arrived at the scene at around 3:04 p.m. Saturday after a community member reported they came across an unconscious man on the trail. Police ruled the death a homicide and reported “obvious injuries to the body.”

The victim was described as a Hispanic man aged between 20 and 30. Police do not believe the killing was a random act.

“The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the victim’s death is ongoing. Investigators are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact the Fairfax County Police Department,” the FCPD said, advising anyone with information to call the Major Crimes Bureau at 703-246-7800, option 2.
