Atlanta United transfer Caleb Wiley to Chelsea

Chelsea will be in Atlanta next week to face Club America in a friendly on July 31 at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Wiley is expected to go on loan. It was reported that he would go to Strasbourg in France. That loan may have changed as Strasbourg parted ways with manager Patrick Vieira last week in what was described as a mutual decision. Chelsea have a history of signing young players and sending them out on loan.

This is the second time Atlanta United have made a transfer with an English club. Miguel Almiron was sold to Newcastle ahead of the 2019 season.

The MLS transfer window opened last week, with the club signing Pedro Amador on a free transfer to play at left back.

With Wiley’s transfer, combined with the sales of other players including Thiago Almada for $21 million and Giorgos Giakoumakis for $10 million, Atlanta United has more than $50 million to bolster its roster. The club will focus primarily on signing a forward and an attacking midfielder. It sits ninth in the East. Atlanta United hosts D.C. United on Friday for its first game of this year’s Leagues Cup.
