Hot and humid with the possibility of strong thunderstorms today in New Jersey

The heat and humidity continue today, with highs of 36 degrees and perceived temperatures between 38 and 40 degrees. It is officially a heatwave, as temperatures have been above 35 degrees for the past three days. This is the third heatwave this year.

Thunderstorms are expected after 4 p.m. today and will last until about midnight. These storms will bring damaging winds and downpours. Power outages and widespread problems are expected across the state tonight.

Humidity will drop overnight into tomorrow and conditions will return to seasonal with highs in the 30s and comfortable feels. It will stay that way all weekend with highs in the 30s and dry conditions.

The unusually dry soils are threatening drought dangers across New Jersey. Most of Mercer County is already in moderate drought, with lower than usual water levels and crops turning brown.
