Forecast First warning: Heavy storms Saturday night, heat on Sunday

Here is your Saturday night forecast for July 13, 2024 from the Minnesota Weather Service and meteorologist Matt Serwe.

The first warning of severe weather remains in effect for Saturday night and for heat and humidity for Sunday.

Rain, storms and clouds caused temperatures in the Twin Cities to be much colder than expected. Most areas saw temperatures in the 25-27 degree range through the afternoon. Further south, severe storms have developed across Minnesota. These could bring large hail, strong winds and possibly a tornado south of the Twin Cities by Saturday evening.

Later tonight, attention will turn to northwest Minnesota, where stronger storms are expected. Initially, these storms could also bring large hail and possibly a tornado, but will transition to strong winds as they move southeast. A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect from Brainerd to the north and west until midnight. In the Twin Cities, the chance of storms increases after 10 p.m. You could lose an hour or two of sleep tonight. In western Wisconsin, storm chances will increase after midnight. By Sunday morning, all storms should have passed.

Unlike Saturday, the chance of storms is much lower on Sunday, making high heat and humidity more likely. After some clouds to start the day, expect more sun and highs around 90° in the Twin Cities in the afternoon. Humidity will be high, and that will make the metropolitan area feel like 95° or warmer. A heat advisory remains in effect for the Twin Cities metropolitan area on Sunday.

Another wave of storms is possible during the night from Sunday to Monday. These storms could also bring strong winds and hail. After another warm and humid day on Monday, the rest of the coming week will be significantly cooler and more pleasant.
