D.C. mayor on shooting that killed toddler, injured teen – NBC4 Washington

The district is in turmoil after a 3-year-old girl was killed and a 17-year-old was injured in two shootings on Friday.

On Friday morning, a 17-year-old girl sitting in a classroom at Dunbar High School in northwest D.C. was grazed in the forehead by a bullet. The university athlete was talking to a teacher when a hail of bullets erupted outside and bullets flew through the windows. The teen’s injury was so deep that her skull was visible, court documents said.

That night, 3-year-old Ty’ah Settles was shot as she drove an SUV on Harford Street SE and opened fire outside, police said. The toddler was flown to a hospital where he died. She is the youngest murder victim in D.C. so far this year.

After the high school shooting, police arrested and charged two teenagers, both of whom were students at the school. More arrests are expected in the case. The video shows a group of teenagers running through an alley.

Saki Frost, 17, and Azhari Graves, 18, were both charged as adults. They were held without bond.

The search for Ty’ah Settles’ murderer continues.

Mayor Muriel Bowser spoke about the shootings for the first time Monday. She expressed anger over the loss of another child and called on people to lay down their weapons.

“Let me say how tragic an incident this is, and I feel like a broken record saying this because unfortunately I had to talk to you about children who were supposed to be with us,” Bowser said.

“Parents, community, police – we’re all too focused on making sure kids are where they’re supposed to be and kids who have guns are where they’re supposed to be,” she said.

There was an increased police presence in Dunbar on Monday. Some members of the community said they are still coming to terms with the shooting.

“It’s really worrying. I just think administrators need to do a little more to screen these kids,” said parent Nathaniel Titus.

When windows broke at Dunbar, another student may have swallowed glass, according to court documents. Both the student and the teenager with the graze wound to the head are expected to recover from their injuries.

“All prayers go out to her and her family and of course this school. It was crazy what we saw,” said student Makhi Brighthaupt.

Two teenagers have been arrested in connection with the May 3 shooting that injured a Dunbar High School student while she was in a classroom. The suspects’ arraignment hearing will shed light on what authorities say led to the shooting.

The suspects in the Dunbar shooting are scheduled to return to court on May 28.

No information has been released regarding a possible suspect or motive for the killing of Ty’ah Settles. Anyone with potentially relevant information is asked to come forward.
