Disaster relief teams on high alert after severe weather warnings

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) has put disaster management teams on high alert after the South African Meteorological Service issued a severe weather warning.

The ministry said these measures were in response to the extreme weather conditions forecast to hit various districts of the province on Monday.

Residents of Ugu, uMgungundlovu, uThukela, Amajuba, Zululand, King Cetshwayo and iLembe districts are urged to exercise extreme caution and prepare for adverse weather conditions, Cogta said in a statement.

According to Cogta, these extreme conditions have created ideal conditions for out-of-control fires, and disaster management teams are also actively deployed across the province to respond to bushfires.

“Residents are warned of the dangers of these fires and urged to take the necessary precautions to protect themselves and their property,” Cogta said.

Expected weather conditions include damaging northwest winds. “Wind speeds of up to 70 km/h are expected, with gusts of over 80 km/h. High temperatures are also expected. Combined with the strong winds, the high temperatures are likely to increase the fire danger,” the statement said.

The ministry said the potential damage included structural damage, risk of injury from debris and disruption to road traffic.

“The strong winds can cause significant damage to buildings and infrastructure, including roofs, windows and other building elements.”

“Debris flying around due to strong winds can pose a serious risk of injury to people outdoors.”

“Strong winds can make driving dangerous, especially for high-profile vehicles, and may result in road closures due to downed trees and debris.”

Cogat has advised residents to secure any loose items around their homes and properties to prevent them from being blown away by the wind.

“It is recommended to stay indoors if possible to avoid the risk of injury from flying debris and to protect yourself from the strong winds.”

Residents are also advised to avoid non-essential journeys to reduce the risk of accidents on the roads.
