Cumberland man killed, 2 minors injured in head-on collision in Gray

A 43-year-old South Portland man was arrested on charges of manslaughter and drunken driving following the crash, the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said.

GRAY, Maine – A 50-year-old Cumberland man was killed and two minors were injured in a two-vehicle crash that occurred late Saturday night in Gray.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that deputies and Gray Fire/EMS responded to multiple reports of a head-on collision in the area of ​​Portland Road and Sugar Maple Road in Gray just before 11:30 p.m.

An investigation revealed that a 2022 Jeep Gladiator driven by 43-year-old Jean Nshimiyimana collided with a 2019 Chevrolet Suburban driven by 50-year-old Daniel Fackrell of Cumberland, which was traveling in the opposite direction, the sheriff’s office said.

Fackrell reportedly suffered life-threatening injuries and died at the scene. Two juvenile passengers in Fackrell’s vehicle sustained injuries that were not considered life-threatening and were taken to Maine Medical Center, the release said. The sheriff’s office said no further information on the minors will be released at this time.

Nshimiyimana was arrested on charges of manslaughter and driving under the influence. More charges are expected, according to the sheriff’s office.

While police reconstructed the accident, Portland Road was closed for several hours.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Department is continuing to investigate the cause of the accident. Speed ​​and alcohol appear to be factors in the crash, the sheriff’s office said.
