Simon Pegg rules out a sequel to “Shaun of the Dead”

Simon Pegg has ruled out a sequel to Shaun of the Dead.

The classic comedy was released 20 years ago and is the first part of the Cornetto trilogy, which also includes the individual films Hot Fuzz and The World’s End.

Although there was never a direct sequel to Shaun of the Dead, Pegg has admitted that it won’t happen because there is no more “story to tell.”

When asked if there could ever be a sequel, the actor told the Hollywood Reporter: “I mean, Universal (Pictures) owns it. If they decide to reboot it, they can if they want, I guess. Although (director) Edgar (Wright) and I would be outraged. (Laughs.)”

Pegg acknowledged that the film was “incredibly personal” and said a reboot would be “a cynical and exploitative exercise.”

“I would hope that people love our Shaun so much that they can resist a reboot,” he said.

“I’m a huge fan of sequels,” Pegg continued. “Some of my favorite movies are sequels: The Empire Strikes Back, Aliens.”

“I’m involved in a few film series that are repeated and remade, and it’s not that I condemn sequels in any way, but I think some stories end. Some stories have a beginning, a middle and an end.

“If you saw Shaun again, if the zombies came back, there would simply be no story to tell,” he added.

“We would have to reset everything we created in Shaun of the Dead, the journey that Shaun goes on and completes. He becomes a new person, but we would then have to dismantle that again to give him a new story arc. Why?

“The best thing we can do with cinema is to challenge people and make them see things they’ve never seen before and experience new things. Entertainment is the most overrated function of art.”

This is not the first time Pegg has spoken out against a Shaun of the Dead sequel. Last year, the star told the Guardian that people on social media often express a desire to see a sequel.

“And I say, ‘No, you don’t fucking need Shaun of the Dead 2! The last thing you need is Shaun of the Dead 2! It’s over. Move on!'” he added.
