Vehicle fires and high-speed accidents in Hamlin County | Local News

{KXLG – Hamlin County, SD} The Hamlin County Sheriff’s Office is reporting two incidents today. On Monday, May 6, 2024, at 11:29 a.m., a vehicle fire was reported near the intersection of 458th Avenue and 184th Street, west of Castlewood. The Watertown Regional Dispatch Center received a 911 call about the incident. The Castlewood Fire Department and Hamlin County Sheriff Schlotterbeck were dispatched to the scene.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the fire destroyed the vehicle. BES Towing of Lake Norden was also on scene to remove the remains of the vehicle.

A separate incident occurred on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, in the evening hours. A sheriff’s deputy with the Hamlin County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call in Bryant. While traveling westbound on SD Highway 28, a dark colored passenger vehicle traveling eastbound passed the deputy at a speed of 95 mph in a 65 mph zone.

Before the deputy could turn on his emergency lights, the speeding car lost control near the intersection of SD Highway 28 and 445th Avenue west of Lake Norden. The car attempted to turn left onto 445th Avenue but drove over a concrete culvert, stalling the car and deploying all of the airbags.

The driver and a passenger were examined by Lake Norden Ambulance and released. BES Towing arrived to tow the damaged vehicle. Lake Norden police were also on scene to assist with traffic control.

The teen driver was charged with speeding, failure to wear a seatbelt and reckless driving.
