Marc Guehi is suspended for England’s quarter-final against Switzerland as the key centre-back is penalised for a teammate’s mistake

England will be without one of their key players, Marc Guehi, for the quarter-finals of the 2024 European Championship against Switzerland.

The Crystal Palace man has been one of the Three Lions’ best players throughout the tournament, but Gareth Southgate will have to reshuffle his defence for the quarter-finals in Düsseldorf.

Southgate doesn’t have much luck replacing Guehi, but he needs to find someone.

Speaking to talkSPORT after the game, Southgate confirmed he would have to make one change as Guehi was unavailable.

Why doesn’t Guehi play against Switzerland?

Guehi received a yellow card for a foul early in England’s 2-1 win over Slovakia.

It was his second yellow card of the tournament, meaning he now faces a one-match suspension.

Guehi received a poor pass from Kieran Trippier and was forced to bring down his opponent, resulting in a yellow card.

He was able to avoid another booking for the rest of the game, but will not play in the quarter-final against the Swiss.

Guehi represented Harry Maguire excellently and made an impression in the centre of defence.

Losing him for this game is undoubtedly a blow for England.

The Three Lions overturned a 1-0 deficit in the dying seconds of their match against Slovakia thanks to a stunning overhead kick from Jude Bellingham, assisted by Guehi.

In extra time, Harry Kane scored the winning goal.

They will have to improve significantly against Switzerland, but Guehi’s absence is a problem.

Southgate has Lewis Dunk, Joe Gomez and Ezri Konsa as other centre-back options to partner John Stones.

The quarter-final between England and Switzerland will take place on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. British time in the Merkur Spiel-Arena in Düsseldorf.
