UPDATE: Search for missing Newport swimmer called off

NEWPORT, R.I. (WLNE) — The search for a man in his 20s who was reported missing in the water at Brenton Point Park on Ocean Drive in Newport on Sunday has been called off, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

The search by the Coast Guard and other authorities extended over 122 nautical miles.

The swimmer was reported missing at 6 p.m. in the rocky area known as 12 O’Clock High.

The Department of Environmental Management’s Law Enforcement Division, the Narragansett Bay Marine Taskforce and the U.S. Coast Guard sent teams to assist in the search.

Due to darkness and very rough seas, the search was called off at 8:50 p.m. on Sunday evening.

The search continued on Monday morning.
