Two South Korean national figure skaters suspended for sexually harassing a younger male figure skater

Two figure skaters from the South Korean national team have been provisionally suspended for sexual harassment, media reported on June 21.

According to sports media reports from that day Committee for Fairness in Sport organized by The Korean Skating Union convened a day earlier, on June 20, to discuss the actions of two figure skaters from the South Korean national team, ‘A‘ And ‘B‘.

Last month, representatives of the South Korean national figure skating team held a training camp in Varese, Italy from May 15 to 28. During the training camp, “A” and “B” got drunk in their dormitories on several occasions and were caught by their superiors, which led to an investigation being launched after they returned to Korea.

During the investigation, it emerged that “A” and “B” had not only illegally consumed alcohol in their dormitories, but had also sexually harassed a figure skater.

The investigation revealed that ‘A’, while intoxicated, had ordered a younger male figure skating representative to ‘C‘ to get into the women’s hostels. ‘A’ then sexually harassed ‘C’. ‘B’, who was also there, then took obscene photos of ‘A’ and sent them to ‘C’ via social media.

After the investigation, the committee agreed to disciplinary measures for “A” and “B”. First, “A” will be banned from figure skating for three years, while “B” will be banned for one year. “C” will also be reprimanded for visiting the figure skaters’ dormitories, while “D”, one of the training camp’s supervisors, will be banned from his activities for three months.

‘A’ and ‘B’ may appeal the Committee’s decision within 7 days of the disciplinary action being announced. If ‘A’s 3-year suspension is confirmed, she will be barred from participating in the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan.
