Driver in hospital after Demorest accident

A driver was hospitalized following a two-vehicle crash in Demorest on Monday.

According to a preliminary report from the Georgia State Patrol (GSP), Mary Ferguson, 90, of Clarkesville, was driving a Hyundai Accent eastbound on Austin Drive. After stopping at a stop sign, she failed to yield the right of way and drove into the path of a Honda CR-V on GA 385/Historic US Highway 441, according to police.

The Honda, driven by Destiny Stapler, 23, of Dahlonega, struck the Hyundai. Ferguson told the investigating officer she did not see the Honda before she pulled onto the road.

Habersham County Emergency Medical Services transported Ferguson to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Demorest with a report of a possible injury.

Forklift and her passenger were not injured.

According to Courtney Lund, GSP spokeswoman, Ferguson received a warning for violating the right-of-way rules.
