Rory McIlroy is advised to investigate Bryson DeChambeau after a bombshell at the US Open

Rory McIlroy, Matthieu Pavon and Patrick Cantlay were advised to ask the USGA to examine the shaft of Bryson DeChambeau’s putter before the final round.

DeChambeau has been the standout player at Pinehurst so far this week, finishing seven under par in 54 holes.

He is the only player of the week to have scored under par in each of his three rounds and goes into Sunday with a comfortable lead.

The American’s hitting power has been a big part of his success so far, as he has averaged over 317 yards.

But his putter also saved him on the treacherous greens of Pinehurst, as he ranks fifth in putting among the entire field of participants at the US Open.

What makes DeChambeau special is that since April he has been playing with rackets that have been individually printed using 3D technology.

The irons were approved by the USGA shortly before the Masters earlier this year, while he uses the Krank long-drive brand for his woods.

He also uses a SIK Pro C-Series arm-lock putter that caught the attention of Grayson Murray’s former caddie Kip Henley.

He posted a still image of DeChambeau putting on X and said that players battling with the American at the top of the rankings should have the 30-year-old’s putter inspected by the USGA.

“If I were a player competing for the top spot at the U.S. Open, I would ask the USGA to review the specifications of this putter,” Henley wrote on X.

“The shaft must be inclined at least 10 degrees away from the head.

“It definitely looks vertical. I’m not mad or hate him in the slightest, but it’s a rule.”

Henley faced heavy criticism online for questioning the legality of DeChambeau’s putter.

One message read: “Bad look at this tweet. Confident Bryson knows the rules.”

Another replied: “That’s a bad tweet. As if Bryson didn’t check his equipment was within the rules when he dipped his golf balls in salt water to make sure they were balanced.”

A third simply said: “This shaft is not vertical.”

Another posted: “The heel is up, right?”
