Police arrest more than 50 people at Champions League final

London’s Metropolitan Police said they had arrested 53 people on Saturday ahead of the Champions League final between Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund after a pitch invasion and attempts to breach security at Wembley Stadium.

Dani Carvajal and Vinicius Jr. scored in the second half to give Real a 2-0 win that extended their European Cup 15th.

In the first minute of the match, there was a pitch invasion in which three players entered the field. Police added that they had arrested several people who had tried to enter the stadium without a ticket.

“We are confident that the vast majority of attempts to gain unlawful entry to Wembley this evening were unsuccessful thanks to the efforts of officers, stewards and other stadium staff,” Metropolitan Police Commander Louise Puddefoot said in a statement.

“Officers made 53 arrests at Wembley – five for pitch invasion and most of the others for attempted security breaches. At major sporting events, people without tickets often try to bypass the perimeter fence or gain entry in other ways.

“A robust police presence is in place to support the Wembley security plan and officers have worked closely with stewards and stadium staff to maintain security at all times.”

Wembley Stadium said it “condemns the actions” of the pitch invaders.

“All individuals have now been arrested. We will support the relevant authorities to ensure that appropriate action is taken,” a Wembley Stadium spokesman said.

In 2021, the 2020 Euro final between England and Italy at Wembley Stadium was marred by clashes between fans and officials in and around the stadium, with several fans attempting to enter the stadium without tickets.
