US district judge struck and killed by car near downtown Reno | News

A U.S. district judge and former Washoe County district attorney was struck by a car and died while out for a walk Wednesday afternoon.

The victim was identified as Larry Hicks.

“Today our community lost an extraordinary man,” said a statement on behalf of the Hicks family, which includes current Washoe County District Attorney Chris Hicks. “Judge Larry Hicks was a deeply admired attorney and judge, a devoted friend, mentor and a dedicated servant of justice. To us, he was first and foremost a man who preferred family over nothing. He was a hero in every way, a loving husband of nearly 59 years, a loving father, an adoring papa and brother. His loss is unfathomable.”

According to a press release from the Reno Police Department, Reno Police, Reno Fire Department and REMSA responded to a report that a car had struck a pedestrian shortly after 2:15 p.m.

It happened at the intersection of South Virginia Street and California Avenue.

The investigation is being conducted by the RPD’s Major Accident Investigation Team.

The driver of the car remained on site and is cooperating with the investigation.

According to police, impairment does not appear to have played a role in the accident.

“On behalf of the men and women of the Reno Police Department, we extend our deepest condolences to Judge Hicks’ family,” Reno Police Chief Kathryn Nance said in a statement. “Tragedies like this leave a lasting mark on our lives, especially when they affect valued members of our community.”

“Today’s news about the Honorable Judge Larry R. Hicks, who served Nevada for over 53 years, is tragic,” said Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam.
