Law enforcement agencies on alert for upcoming Cricket World Cup in New York

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup takes place next month.

“Recent pro-ISIS propaganda specifically targeting the upcoming India-Pakistan match at this major event, coupled with ongoing propaganda from officials and fans highlighting major sporting venues as priority targets, raises concerns and underscores the need for heightened vigilance among public and private sector security partners,” the NYPD said.

The NYPD assessment, obtained by ABC News, refers to the March attack outside Moscow and a number of other incidents that underscore the current threat level. It also mentions a May 28 post on a pro-ISIS channel that shows a hooded figure with a rifle on his back and drones in the background, and mentions “Nassau Stadium.”

The assessment was distributed to law enforcement agencies throughout the region.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul said Wednesday that there would be increased security measures in response to a potential threat, including “increased police presence, enhanced surveillance and thorough screening procedures.”

The governor’s office said there was a credible threat to public safety.

The International Cricket Council Men’s T20 World Cup is scheduled to begin on June 3 in Nassau County, New York.
