The motorcyclist was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident but was pronounced dead at the scene, the statement added. The occupants of the parked car he struck in the crash suffered minor injuries but were treated at the scene and released.

A preliminary investigation has determined that while speed was a factor in the crash, alcohol was not a factor, the release said. The LPD Collision Reconstruction and Scene Handling team responded to the scene of the accident, leading to a four-hour investigation that resulted in the closure of a southbound lane on Garfield Avenue.

While the news release added that the coroner’s office will release the man’s identity at a later date, Shaleene Shates confirmed to the Reporter-Herald that her brother, Michael Shates, was the motorcyclist killed in the crash.

Shates said she and her brother are originally from Lodi, California, where she still lives. She said that after her father’s death in 2014, her brother lived in various places for a time, including with their grandmother. She said he lived with her before moving to Loveland last May, but when she ran into financial difficulties, he moved to Loveland and moved in with a friend he had met through online gambling over the past decade.

Shates said her brother was “a real ladies’ man” with a wonderful sense of humor and a love of fishing, playing video games with his friends and enjoying his favorite foods: chili mac, cheese and tacos. She said that while in Loveland he worked toward becoming a traveling nurse.

She also said that her sons, his nephews, were incredibly fond of him.

“He was a good boy,” she said. “Although he was treated harshly in his early childhood, he did the best he could with what he had.”
