Triple-digit heat remains relentless in Houston ahead of Memorial Day weekend

Today’s forecast:

There will be no respite from this incessant heat. Temperatures climb again into the 90s with a heat index ranging from 100° to 104°. More severe weather is possible across central and north Texas this afternoon and night. This won’t happen in Houston.

Heat warnings this holiday weekend:

The cause of this oppressive heat is a dome of high pressure over southern Mexico. We are at the edge of this anticyclone. This does two things. First, it keeps the severe weather north of us and second, it gives us a lot of heat. Temperatures climb into the mid-90s this weekend, with the hottest day of the year expected on Sunday and Memorial Day Monday. And the humidity also continues to rise. The heat index for Sunday and Monday will be between 106° and 110°. Heat warnings go into effect when the heat index exceeds 108° and that’s where we’ll be this weekend. Be careful, these are records that look like numbers for the month of May.
