Photos: Storms cause destruction in Houston

A powerful storm ravaged Texas Thursday evening, killing at least four people and lashing the state with destructive winds and heavy rain.

The force of the storm caused widespread damage in Houston, shattering windows on ground-floor storefronts and downtown skyscrapers. It toppled trees, downed power lines and even destroyed a wall at a downtown nightclub, leaving piles of bricks.

Nearly 1 million utility customers were still without power Friday morning, and officials said the storm brought winds of up to 100 miles per hour. With some roads still blocked, authorities warned people to stay home while they assess the damage and clear debris.

Here’s a look at the storm damage in Houston.

At least two people were killed by falling trees, authorities said, and firefighters responded to reports of gas leaks and downed power lines, including one crossing a major highway. Authorities said Friday that it could take up to 48 hours for power to be fully restored to the area.

Houston schools canceled classes Friday. Videos circulating online showed rain lashing the closed roof of Minute Maid Park as the Houston Astros played the Oakland Athletics.

Residents took shelter in their homes and cars, as well as nearby buildings, as the storm moved through the city.

As authorities continued to clean up the damage Friday morning, downtown streets were covered in shards of glass and other debris.
