Police officer was taken to the hospital because of a traffic accident with Scottie Scheffler

A Louisville police officer was hospitalized Friday morning after being dragged by Scottie Scheffler’s car, according to the arrest memo.

Scheffler was arrested following the incident, which occurred outside Valhalla Golf Club as the world’s top golfer attempted to enter the course to prepare for the start of his second round.

Scheffler was charged with second-degree assault, third-degree criminal trespass, reckless driving and failure to obey traffic trooper signals.

Scheffler attempted to avoid traffic caused by an unrelated fatal accident involving a shuttle bus.

“Detective Gillis was in the middle of the westbound lane wearing full LMPD uniform and a high visibility yellow reflective rain jacket,” the citation states. “Detective Gillis stopped the subject and attempted to give instructions. The subject refused to obey and accelerated forward, knocking Detective Gillis to the ground. Detective Gillis suffered pain, swelling and abrasions to his left wrist and knee. He was transported to hospital by emergency responders for further medical treatment.”

Scheffler was taken into police custody, according to footage obtained by ESPN’s Jeff Darlington, and taken to jail.

He returned to the course shortly after 9 a.m. and in time for his 10:08 a.m. tee time.

“This morning I followed police instructions. “It was a very chaotic situation, understandably given the tragic accident that had previously occurred, and there was a major misunderstanding about what I believe I was being asked to do,” Scheffler said in a statement.

“I never intended to disobey any of the instructions. I hope I can put that aside and focus on golf today.”

“In the confusion, Scottie allegedly disregarded another officer’s traffic signals, which led to these charges,” said his attorney, Steve Romines.

“Several eyewitnesses have confirmed that he did nothing wrong, but simply proceeded as instructed. He stopped immediately when asked to do so and at no time did he attack an officer with his vehicle. We will take this matter to court as necessary and he will be fully exonerated.”

Darlington stood behind Scheffler and observed the entire situation.

“When he did not stop, the police officer clung to the vehicle, Scheffler then drove another 10 meters before stopping the car. The officer then grabbed his arm and tried to pull him out of the car before Scheffler finally opened the door. The officer then pulled Scheffler out of the car, pushed him against the car and immediately handcuffed him,” Darlington said on “SportsCenter.”
