Accused former MPD officers provided no assistance

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Two former Memphis Police Department officers resigned while under investigation for a May 6, 2023 crash that occurred during an unauthorized pursuit.

Officers Ontario Malone and Marquavius Williams were reportedly on patrol on May 6, 2023, when they “observed a suspicious vehicle,” according to documents ABC24 obtained from Tennessee’s Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission.

Officers pursued the vehicle after it left the gas station and there was no evidence or information that the vehicle was involved in any type of crime or violating traffic laws.

Body-worn cameras and in-car video cameras were not activated by any of the officers, and Williams turned off emergency lights while driving.

“Officer Williams operated the patrol car and pursued the vehicle without activating his blue lights or siren and did not turn on his body-worn camera and/or in-car video,” the documents state. “Neither the supervisor nor the dispatcher were notified and the pursued vehicle crashed, resulting in one fatality and several passengers being transported to the hospital with injuries.”

“Neither Officer Williams nor his partner rendered aid to the occupants of the vehicle.”

According to the documents, officers also did not call an ambulance for the accident.

Both officers resigned in January 2024 after working for MPD since 2019.

The two officers were charged with two counts of leaving the scene of an accident, six counts of official misconduct and four counts of leaving the scene of an accident, according to court records and a confirmation from the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office.

The former officers were arrested on May 8 and both were released on bail.

The arraignment against the two is scheduled for June 21.
