Tiffany Haddish is in a car accident before the podcast with Dax Shepard

Not even a car accident could stop Tiffany Haddish from creating her Armchair expert Debut.

During her May 6 appearance on the Dax Shepard-hosted podcast, the comedian spent the first few minutes unpacking the aftermath of the frightening car accident she experienced on the way to taping the episode.

“I’m a little worried about you,” Shepard told Haddish in the first seconds of the recording, offering tea and snacks as she settled down. Although the Bad Boys: Ride or Die As the actress assured Shepard, his co-host Monica Padman and the audience that she was unhurt, she admitted to being shaken.

“As the car turned, I sat there shaking a little and wondering, ‘Where did my phone go?’ Because it flew out of the holder and hit me in the arm and leg,” she remembers. “I picked the phone up off the ground and then thought, let me try to get the car out of the middle of the road. Thank God no one was coming from the other direction.”

Shepard, who had picked her up from the scene, interjected, “Yeah, because you ran into oncoming traffic, and luckily there was no traffic.”

Haddish said that although it was difficult, she eventually managed to get the car out of harm’s way. “It fought,” Shepard noted. “There was a big long patch of rubber where you had driven it down the road on three wheels.”

When Shepard noticed that several pedestrians in the area had recognized her, Haddish joked that she was thinking about playing it up to the crowd. “I was trying to decide if I should act like I was crazy,” she said. “My first thought was, ‘Jump out of this car and curse these mothers.’ But then I thought, ‘F—, you’re famous, don’t act like that.'”

Referring to the other driver involved in the incident, she continued: “And then I see the guy get out of the car and walk towards me. And he says, ‘Are you okay?’ He said, ‘Oh, shit.’ I met my favorite person.’ And I’m holding the phone and I’m like, ‘Who do I call first?’ And I’m shaking. And I’m like, “Have I fucked this guy before?”

Haddish said she eventually called her sister and, while waiting, realized that she actually recognized the other driver from her time at LA comedy club The Comedy Store. Shepard admitted that the driver was “extraordinarily handsome,” as if he were in a movie, and joked, “That’s a meet cute!”

Later, Haddish wondered aloud if her face was swollen and admitted, “It hurts.”

Then Shepard asked, “Do you want to go home?” I’ll drive you home,” to which Haddish replied, “No, because I’m just going to sit around and cry.”

As they continued recording, Padman and Shepard sent someone to get ice for the comedian’s face, marveling at Haddish’s decision to come through.

“Most people in your situation – who are famous, who get in a car accident and come on a podcast – would probably just forget about the podcast, who cares?” Padman noted. “They called and specifically said, ‘Hey, I was in this car accident and I’m going to do it anyway.’ And I overheard that, are you kidding me?”

“I’m not bleeding, I’m not broken,” Haddish said. “I can still talk and communicate.”
