Stabbing at event in UK leaves singer in shock

Taylor Swift says she is “completely at a loss” after three children were killed in a stabbing during a Swift class in the UK.

A 9-year-old girl died in hospital “in the early hours” of Tuesday morning, Merseyside Police said in a press release. The two children who died on Monday were 6 and 7 years old.

The stabbing, in which ten other people were injured, occurred on Monday in Southport, Great Britain.

“The horror of yesterday’s attack is still overwhelming me and I am just in complete shock,” Swift wrote in her Instagram story early Tuesday.

“The loss of life and innocence and the horrific trauma inflicted on everyone present, the families and the first responders,” Swift continued. “These were just little kids in a dance class. I don’t know how I can ever express my condolences to these families.”

Among the ten injured are eight children and two adults. Both are in critical condition.

Five of the injured children “are in a critical condition,” the police statement said Tuesday. “All of those injured sustained stab wounds in the attack. Two adults are also in a critical condition after being injured in the incident,” Merseyside Police Chief Serena Kennedy said Monday in a statement provided to USA TODAY.

A 17-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder, Kennedy said, announcing that he would be questioned by detectives. The suspect is from the nearby coastal village of Banks and is originally from Cardiff in Wales.

Police warned against misinformation regarding the arrest: “A name has been mentioned on social media in connection with the suspect in the Southport incident. This name is incorrect and we ask people not to speculate about details of the incident while the investigation is ongoing.”

Police were called to reports of a stabbing at 11:47am at a location in the coastal town of Southport, in the English county of Merseyside.

“When they arrived, they were shocked to find that several people, many of them children, had been the victims of a brutal attack and had sustained serious injuries,” Merseyside Police Chief Serena Kennedy said in a statement to USA TODAY on Monday.

“It is believed that the children were attending a Taylor Swift event at a dance school when the perpetrator, armed with a knife, entered the premises and began attacking those present,” the statement continued. “We believe that the injured adults were attempting to protect the children when they were attacked.”

The international leg of Swift’s Eras Tour reaches Poland on Thursday, with the singer’s return to the UK currently scheduled for next month.

The British royal family reacts to the stabbing in Southport, England. King Charles III described the incident as “absolutely appalling”.

“My wife and I were deeply shocked to hear of the absolutely horrific incident in Southport today,” the royal said in a statement shared on the royal family’s X account on Monday. “We send our deepest condolences, prayers and sympathy to the families and loved ones of those who so tragically lost their lives and to all those affected by this truly horrific attack.”

Prince William and Princess Kate also expressed their condolences to the families of the victims in an Instagram story post shared on Monday.

“As parents, we cannot even begin to imagine what the families, friends and loved ones of those killed and injured in Southport today must be going through,” the couple said in a joint statement. “We send our love, thoughts and prayers to everyone involved in this horrific and heinous attack.”

Swifties join forces to help stabbing victims

Swift fans appear to be banding together to help victims of the Southport tragedy.

On Monday, a fundraiser called “Swifties for Support” appeared on Just Giving in aid of Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool, UK.
