Train accident in Jharkhand: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee sharply criticized the BJP-led central government over the Howrah-Mumbai Mail train accident that killed two people and injured 20 on Tuesday morning.

The TMC chief spoke of a “catastrophic railway accident” and asked: “Is this governance? This series of nightmares almost every week, this never-ending chain of deaths and injuries on the tracks: how long are we going to tolerate this? Will the insensitivity of the Indian government never end?”

“Howrah-Mumbai mail derailed early this morning in Chakradharpur district of Jharkhand, leaving many dead and many injured as the tragic consequences. My condolences go out to the bereaved and their next of kin,” she wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Jharkhand State MP Kalpana Murmu Soren also expressed her grief over the train accident in Jharkhand and prayed for a speedy recovery of the injured.

“I received the sad news of the Mumbai Howrah Mail derailment this morning. I pray for everyone’s safety and a speedy recovery. The Saraikela Kharsawan district administration has set up a helpline for information on relief and rescue operations,” she said.

Train accident in Jharkhand

Two people were killed and 20 injured when 18 coaches of the Mumbai-Howrah Mail derailed in Jharkhand’s Seraikela-Kharsawan district early Tuesday, officials said. The incident occurred at 3:45 am near Badabamboo, about 80 km from Jamshedpur, in the Chakradharpur range of the South East Railway.

“Two people were killed and 20 injured when 18 coaches of the Howrah-Mumbai Mail derailed near Barabamboo. Rescue operations are underway and an NDRF team is rushing to the accident site,” said DC West Singhbhum Kuldeep Chaudhary, who is camping at the accident site.

Following the accident, the South East Railway cancelled some express and passenger trains on Tuesday, including Howrah-Titlagarh-Kantabanji Ispat Express 22861 and Howrah-Barbil Janshatabdi Express 12021. Some other trains were either cancelled early or diverted near Barabamboo railway station due to the accident.
