Teenager charged with assault after fireworks incident

A juvenile man has been charged with two counts of assault with a weapon and two counts of harassment following an incident involving fireworks in Stittsville.

Two young women were walking on a sidewalk in the area of ​​Main Street and Fernbank Road around 11:30 p.m. on July 1 when they were struck by a white SUV, Ottawa police said in a news release Monday. The vehicle stopped and a passenger in the back seat of the SUV aimed fireworks directly at the young women.

None of the women were injured, but they were briefly pursued by the driver of the vehicle after fleeing the scene of the accident, police said.

After an investigation, it was determined that there were four male juveniles in the vehicle at the time of the incident. One is believed not to have been involved in the incident, two have been placed in a diversion program, and the third is now facing assault and harassment charges.

Police said a video of the incident was widely shared on social media.

The West Criminal Investigation Unit continues to investigate the case, the release said.
